New study on increasing mortality associated with tropical cyclones
Last modified:

A pioneering study investigating the epidemiological incidence of short-term mortality linked to the passage of tropical cyclones has been published in The Lancet Planetary Health. This article, co-authored by our colleague Dominic Royé, quantifies and locates the impact of tropical cyclones on human health on the planet. Mortality risk indicators have been increasing in recent decades, especially in Latin America, the Caribbean and South Asia. Specifically, exposure to tropical cyclones was associated with an overall 6 % (95 % CI 4 – 8) increase in mortality within 2 weeks of their passage. Globally, the excess is estimated at 97,430 deaths.
