About the project

The Riego-Asesor project aims to develop and validate in field conditions a comprehensive virtual advisory system (On-Line) that makes available to end users an irrigation decision making system, focused on fruit and vegetable crops typical of intensive agriculture in the Mediterranean basin of the Segura river, in Spain.

Objectives

The specific objectives are:

  • Development and implementation of forecasting tools for meteorological variables to predict the reference evapotranspiration (ETo) and effective precipitation, and therefore the water needs of crops in the coming days.
  • Selection, calibration and implementation of semi-mechanical models to estimate soil water balance and crop productivity from applied water.
  • Compilation in a continuously updateable database of: i) good irrigation practices and agronomic results, ii) location of climatic stations and available agronomic data, and (iii) crop coefficients to determine the potential water requirements of crops.
  • Construction of the RIEGO-ASESOR tool (On-Line irrigation advisor) and implementation and validation in commercial plots.
