Biodiversidad y recursos naturales

About the project

CLIma, MEdio natural y ECOturismo Fase II, or CLIMECO II is the continuation of a series of studies carried out by FIC and funded by the call for research projects for non-profit foundations granted by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge during the year 2022.

Objectives

CLIMECO II aims to:

  • To determine the analogous days that may cause a risk threshold to be exceeded for various forest species that inhabit the Sierra y Cañones de Guara Park (Huesca).
  • Characterization of analogous days by classifying the most common scenarios leading to risk scenarios.
  • Estimation of climate change impacts on the natural environment and ecotourism.

Results

Among its main results, the following stand out:

  • The need to undertake conservation measures for various forest species in the pre-Pyrenean region(Abies Alba, Fagus Sylvatica, Quercus Faginea, Pinus Sylvestris), among them the articulation of specific measures is proposed according to the specific climatic and geomorphological conditions: ecological corridors, silviculture or edge buffer zones.
  • In terms of governance, the considerations made in phase I of CLIMECO are reinforced: the improvement of cohesion and the adoption of guidelines on an interregional scale, improving the coordination of specific ecotourism measures adopted in the Pyrenean counties of Catalonia, or on the French side. A reorganization of the strategies linked to the Board of Trustees and its functioning is urged in order to implement concrete and coordinated actions in the Aragonese Pyrenees that are capable of contributing to a greater awareness of the pre-Pyrenean beech forests, the benefits and opportunities they offer and the importance of their conservation in the face of future risks.
  • Local stakeholders and institutions are calling for specific measures to mitigate episodes of water scarcity, the magnitude and duration of which are expected to increase in the future. Adaptation measures are also requested for tourism activities to adapt to increasingly fragmented seasons with greater heat waves (an increasingly extended summer season but with increasingly recurrent heat peaks that will make it impossible to carry out activities safely). It also calls for measures to protect endangered forest species and to prevent an increased risk of fires in the future.

Funded by

Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge through grants to third-sector entities or non-governmental organizations that carry out activities of general interest considered to be of social interest in the field of scientific and technical research and environmental protection under state jurisdiction. This research has been funded by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge but does not express its opinion.
