About the project

Innova-Nicaragua is a project funded by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) that supports small coffee producers in northern Nicaragua through the co-design and implementation of a platform in application (app) format that incorporates a Geographic Information System (GIS) equipped with two specialized tools for managing information for decision-making on climate change adaptation. The first, Climate Risk Information Tool (CRIT), will allow the visualization of vulnerable elements of the territory to support long-term adaptation decision-making. The second, Monitoring Extreme EvenTs (MEET), will provide producers with information to support day-to-day management of the coffee value chain through daily updated bulletins that they will receive on their cell phones.

Objectives

This project also seeks to reactivate the associative, productive and trading systems of coffee growers and to develop local capacities to manage, maintain and use the platform.

The activities planned to achieve the project objectives are as follows:

  1. Formation of a Traditional Knowledge Technical Group (GTST).
  2. Co-design of short- and long-term derived variables with the GTST.
  3. Adaptation of the GIS platform to the needs of the coffee value chain.
  4. Design and construction of the app to share information with coffee growers
  5. Acquisition of weather observation and data recording equipment for FEM
  6. Training of the GTST for the interpretation of the information provided by the application.
  7. Training of coffee growers and FEM techniques in the management of meteorological observatories.
  8. Capacity building of UNA staff for the administration of the GIS platform.

In 2024, the project was awarded by the Nicaraguan Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA) for its commitment and contribution to the development of agricultural science, during the II “National Agricultural Research Award 2024”, specifically in the category of “Systems and technologies for the sustainable production of agriculture and livestock”.
