Santander Natural Capital is a project led by the City Council of Santander, whose main objective is to strengthen the role of the network of urban green areas in the conservation of biodiversity at the local level, enhancing environmental services that help improve the quality of life of the citizens of Santander. To this end, it relies on strategic planning, citizen participation and the involvement of Santander’s society. With a major effort in the field of environmental education and participation, Santander Natural Capital also aims to use green areas to reconnect the urban population with nature, and thus broaden social support for its conservation. Santander Capital Natural also brings nature into the classroom, taking the classroom out into nature and inviting neighbors to participate in its study and conservation.
It is being carried out in the entire municipality of Santander, capital of the Autonomous Community of Cantabria. Thanks to the project, environmental restoration actions have been carried out in degraded urban and peri-urban natural areas, actions to enhance biodiversity in parks and urban green areas, actions to renaturalize schools and urban areas such as Doctor Madrazo Avenue or the courtyard of the “Green Schools” in the Entrehuertas neighborhood. The gardens and terraces of Santander are also a very important part of the project, which, through the Network of Gardens and Terraces for Biodiversity, will contribute to welcome the fauna and flora in the city, providing small oases of refuge and food for pollinating insects, small birds, amphibians or reptiles. In any case, the entire territory of Santander and its citizens are part of the project through the plans and strategies aimed at the whole municipality to be carried out, with the participation of citizens who wish to participate.
The drafting of the climate change adaptation planning led by FIC is structured around the following tasks:
