Local climate change projections
We design tools to simulate expected changes in future climate and assess how they may affect us through risk and vulnerability analysis.
The ACCIÓN – RAMSAR project – completed on July 9, 2024, has presented innovative results for environmental conservation and the fight against climate change in Spain, focusing on the pilot areas of the Doñana, Albufera de València and Mar Menor parks.
Over the past seven months, workshops organized by the Foundation for Climate Research (FIClima) brought together local experts and managers to improve climate change management strategies, gathering detailed information and exploring improvements to current practices. Climate-Smart Strategies were developed for 19 key conservation targets defined through these workshops.High-resolution climate and hydrological projections, developed by FIClima, enabled an accurate understanding of future climate change impacts on ecosystem biodiversity, including species, communities and ecosystem services.
ACCIÓN-RAMSAR has communicated valuable information for wetland conservation and management under future climate scenarios, strengthening national and international conservation policies. Collaborations with projects such as FORESTECCO and REWET stand out, showing the effectiveness of combining scientific research with local practical experience for robust adaptive management.
The following video provides more information about the ACTION-RAMSAR project.
These are coordinated actions to analyze the impact of climate change on ecosystems and species, incorporating this knowledge into the adaptive management of conservation projects. These strategies consider climate change in natural resource management, adopting forward-looking objectives and linking strategies with climate impacts and vulnerabilities.
The strategies presented seek to reduce existing threats and improve resilience to climate change. In addition, they focus on adaptation measures to create necessary conditions for biodiversity or prevent human maladaptations resulting from climate change.
Ramsar Action closes with results that can be applied for climate adaptation in key Spanish wetlands: Doñana, L'Albufera de València and Mar Menor.
Climate-Smart Strategies were developed for each wetland taking into account 19 key conservation targets defined through workshops with local experts.
The local detail simulations developed anticipate climate change impacts on conservation targets, supporting adaptive management.
ACCIÓN-RAMSAR strengthens national and international wetland conservation policies, highlighting key collaborations with projects also developed by FIClima such as FORESTECCO and REWET.
