About the project

Systemic integration of transformative technical and nature-based solutions to improve climate neutrality in European cities and regions and address climate change.

Objectives

URBREATH aims to develop, implement, demonstrate, validate and replicate a comprehensive urban revitalisation methodology based on community and stakeholder participation, focused on greening and renaturalisation.

This process will be supported by advanced technologies developed and tested by the project. The project will use techniques such as local digital twins and artificial intelligence, as well as social innovation, to achieve its vision.

The climate neutrality paradigm is at the core of this methodology, whose goal is to regenerate disadvantaged and abandoned areas, brownfields and other problematic sites through physical transformations of the built environment and renaturalisation interventions that will radically improve social interactions, inclusion, equity and liveability in cities.

To this end, URBREATH has identified the following specific objectives:

  1. Create a stakeholder group under the Living Labs (LL) concept.
  2. Establish the ICT tools, methods and participatory processes needed to increase stakeholder engagement.
  3. Establish innovative cooperative organisational models that ensure project sustainability and aim at the systemic adoption of solutions, mainly NBS and hybrid solutions, for urban regeneration and climate neutrality.
  4. Develop and demonstrate efficient and effective services, models and tools for the quantitative assessment of climate-impact effects for climate neutrality, regeneration and adaptation planning.
  5. Develop and use new combinations of nature-based solutions (NBS) and hybrid approaches to enhance the positive effects of interventions, making them more effective in improving climate neutrality, resilience and urban/local regeneration.
  6. Create a framework to evaluate nature-based solutions (NBS) by monitoring solutions implemented in four European regions.
  7. Replicate the URBREATH methodology and tools through mentoring and coaching.
  8. Support the uptake of URBREATH sustainable solutions for urban/regional planning, regeneration, resilience and climate neutrality through extensive awareness-raising and dissemination activities.
  9. Develop new business models and strategies to improve regional climate resilience.
