Local climate change projections
We design tools to simulate expected changes in future climate and assess how they may affect us through risk and vulnerability analysis.
Project description
CAESAR is a project of the European Climate Change Adaptation Mission aimed at mobilizing private financing in adaptation. It develops a Private Adaptation Financing Framework (PAFF) that combines climate risk assessment with cost-benefit analysis to build solid and quantified investment arguments. The approach is tested in nine case studies in Spain, Ukraine, Switzerland and Norway, covering floods, water scarcity, droughts, heat waves and forest fires.
Activities carried out
The foundation leads the generation of regional climate scenarios, the first link in the project’s chain of evidence.
- It will apply its statistical downscaling methodology FICLIMA to produce high resolution local projections in the nine case studies, under different SSP scenarios of CMIP6, adapting existing sources (EUROCORDEX, national weather agencies) and generating specific downscaling with bias correction where insufficient information exists.
- Characterization of the relevant extreme events at each site: intense precipitation, droughts, heat waves and fires.
The FIC is also involved in risk and impact assessment and cost-benefit analysis of adaptation measures, and is part of the Advisory Committee of External Experts of the project.
