The Foundation and its objectives

FIC, more than 30 years committed to climate research for a more sustainable future

In a context very different from today’s, the technical team of the Foundation for Climate Research (FIC) began its research in 1992 with the intention of producing knowledge about the behavior of the climate and its possible evolution affected by the human hand. The vocation from the beginning was to find results applicable to the resolution of concrete problems.

Among those early works, it is worth mentioning that the FIC originally developed the first simulations of future climate generated in Spain to support decision-making on biodiversity and forests. The immediate objective of these simulations was to answer the question: Which species would be most adapted in each point of the territory taking into account the most probable climate trends at the local scale?

1992

Start of research activity
1995

The basis of the Foundation is constituted, continuing in a more stable way with the same scientific and applied activities that had been developed, and with its diffusion in society.
1997

Generation of the first future climate scenarios, simulating a change in climate throughout the 21st century similar to that offered by current simulations.
1999

FIC is constituted as an autonomous non-profit organization. As a foundation, the organization was eligible to develop more important projects financed by the European Union, thus giving greater impact to its research and opening new horizons for the organization. This allowed it to broaden its range and climate applications, developing its own methodology for the statistical regionalization of climate scenarios.
2013

Update of the FIClima method for the projection of climate scenarios.
2015

The Foundation becomes a multidisciplinary entity incorporating specialists in various fields besides climate, such as: agriculture, ecosystems, hydrology or tourism; becoming a research center capable of providing integrated solutions to the challenges that climate may pose in the future.

Objectives

1.

Elaborate, promote, execute and intervene in activities, programs and projects of cooperation for development, especially those related to climate, meteorology and environment.
2.

To deepen and broaden scientific knowledge on the functioning and predictability of the climate system and its relationships with natural and socioeconomic systems.
3.

To disseminate this knowledge in order to contribute to the achievement of an increasingly responsible and conscious society in its relations with nature.
4.

To deepen and broaden scientific knowledge on issues related to the environment in general.
5.

To deepen the knowledge and study of urban structures and their evolution over time in relation to urban and territorial planning strategies, with special attention to aspects related to climate, meteorology and the environment.
6.

Environmental protection with special attention to the problem of climate change.
7.

To encourage and facilitate the research activities of third parties in the aforementioned areas of knowledge, making the research capacity of the Foundation available to them for the development of their own projects and objectives. Public or private entities may access the services of the Foundation, free of charge or against economic benefit, benefiting from its infrastructure and experience in research for the best achievement of its purposes, provided that the scientific interest of the same justifies it, at the discretion of the Foundation.

Our team

The Foundation for Climate Research has a highly qualified interdisciplinary team of experts in climatology, meteorology, engineering, environment, urban planning, development cooperation and information technology, among others. This team also includes volunteers and external collaborators.
