About the project

ReBioCCan seeks to develop participatory proposals for climate-resilient biodiversity refuges in Biosphere Reserves along the Cantabrian coast, including areas within the maritime-terrestrial public domain.

The ReBioCCan framework

    n t

  • We generate high-resolution local climate scenarios based on CMIP6.
  • n t

  • We analyse the future evolution of the water balance and resource availability.
  • n t

  • We model the future distribution of plant species and ecosystems.
  • n t

  • We assess landscape fragmentation and connectivity.
  • n t

  • We identify areas with greater capacity to persist under climate change.
  • n t

  • We work with managers and local stakeholders to translate results into participatory adaptation proposals.
  • n t

  • This initiative combines advanced modelling, territorial analysis and participatory processes to turn scientific evidence into decisions that can be applied at the local scale.
  • n

What it makes possible

    n t

  • Anticipating how climate and water will evolve in each territory.
  • n t

  • Identifying areas capable of maintaining biodiversity in the future.
  • n t

  • Detecting vulnerable areas and action priorities.
  • n t

  • Connecting refuges through territorial planning.
  • n t

  • Translating science into real decisions with managers and communities.
  • n

nReBioCCan strengthens the ecological resilience of territories with high environmental value and contributes to meeting international biodiversity and climate change commitments, in alignment with the PNACC and national conservation strategies.

About the project

  • The project works in two emblematic territories, Picos de Europa and Urdaibai, where nature, culture and human activity coexist under increasing climate pressure. Its goal is clear: to anticipate how climate and hydrology will evolve, analyse impacts on species and ecosystems, and propose areas that could function as climate-smart refuges in the future.
